December 2009 - GROUND BREAKING - FLOWERS HOME (#11)   (by Dan Macari)

Habitat for Humanity Pickens County held a groundbreaking ceremony for its 11th home on December 21 located on Hill Circle Road.  Thomas and Natasha Flowers and their children Jacob and Madison comprise the family selected to own this home when completed – assuming all requirements are met.

Habitat President, Al Rothe, Jr. presided over the groundbreaking and introduced the Flowers family to the large crowd of volunteers and dignitaries who were in attendance.  He noted that Habitat is a non-denominational Christian ministry whose goal is to eliminate poverty housing by helping needy families purchase decent affordable homes.

Several of Habitat’s major sponsors were represented:  Dick  Hammill  spoke on behalf of the Hammill Foundation and Big Canoe Chapel.  Stan Barnett spoke on behalf of PCCRA (The Community Thrift Store).

In addition, County Commissioner Robert Jones and Sheriff Donnie Craig were on hand to help with the groundbreaking activities.  Both dignitaries praised the work of Habitat in Pickens County in building affordable housing for the needy.

Al Rothe then closed the meeting with the traditional handing out of shovels to officially break ground for this new Habitat home.  (See photo below.)
